Homemade Lotion Bars

One of my favorite parts about making my own sustainable beauty products is that I know exactly what’s in them. It’s comforting to know that the only ingredients in my lotion are coconut oil and cocoa butter which both have amazing benefits for skin!

These lotion bars great for after the shower and to revitalize skin. Follow this recipe for an eco-friendly product that’s good for you and the earth.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup cocoa butter
  • Silicon mold or cupcake tin
  • Cooking Pot
  • Ceramic/Glass bowl or another Cooking Pot for a double broiler

Steps:

1. Fill cooking pot about 1/4 of the way full with water and set to boil.

2. Once water is boiled, place ceramic bowl on top and add coconut oil. Stir while until melted.

3. Add cocoa butter and continue to stir.

4. After both have fully melted and have been combined well, turn off stove.

5. Let cool for a couple of minutes. Then pour the liquid into molds.

6. Place in refridgerator for one full day.

7. Once bars are solid remove from mold and place in jar. Store in room temperature or refridgerator.

Tip: if you have difficulty with the liquid solidifying place the mold into the freezer for 3 hours and then the fridge for an hour.

To use:

  • Take lotion bar in hand and glide over skin. The lotion bar will melt on your skin and you’ll be able to rub it in.

Remember, a little goes a long way!

Tip: I’ve found that it’s best to use before putting on pajamas or clothes that I don’t care about because the oil will take time to absorp into skin.

Where to buy cocoa butter:

I bought my cocoa butter from Etsy. If you’re interested HERE is the link. I loved this purchase because it made it easy to use and I supported a small business! I purchased an 8 oz. bag.
